1 Mon Monday 1 June, 7.15pm - Great Hall, Hellenic Centre Prouder Than Ever: my War, my Diary, my Embroideries A presentation of the secret diary kept by Major Casdagli from his capture in Crete on 1 June 1941 through his incarceration in Prisoner of War camps. Introduced by Dr George Vassiadis, Royal Holloway, University of London; led by Alexis Penny Casdagli, compiler of the book (published by Cylix Press); featuring readings from the diary, Casdagli’s own documents, photographs and war embroideries and songs of the time performed by Plastikes Karekles. 8 Mon Monday 8 June, 7.15pm - Great Hall, Hellenic Centre Petros Markaris in discussion with David Connolly Petros Markaris has written several plays, cooperated with Theo Angelopoulos on a number of film scripts and has translated into Greek Goethe and Brecht. He became known to a much wider audience with his series of crime novels and is considered one of the most successful living Greek authors. Dr David Connolly has taught literary translation at the Ionian University, the University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has translated extensively poetry and novels (Markaris’s crime novels amongst them) from Greek into English. 12 Fri Friday 12 June and Saturday 13 June, 7.30pm - Great Hall, Hellenic Centre The Greek Legends: a Comedy Remake - Myths Join the Fates for an evening of hilarity in the underworld as Hammer and Tongs Theatre bring the legends of Ancient Greece to the Hellenic Centre. Dodge snakes with Medusa’s stylists, chug protein shakes with the goddess of war, and glimpse the dinner-party squabbles on Mount Olympus that really started the Trojan War.
