A Tale of Two Cities: Urban Reconstruction and Identity Formation in Izmir and Thessaloniki Izmir and Thessaloniki, both being wealthy Ottoman ports until the early 20th century, were severely destroyed by fire in 1922 and 1917, respectively. This illustrated lecture, in English, by Kalliopi Amygdalou discusses their subsequent reconstruction and explores the involvement of architecture and urbanism in the process of identity formation within the context of nationalism and peripheral modern ties.
