The Art of the Tenor An illustrated lecture in English by Helena Matheopoulos. Most opera lovers would agree that nothing in opera can compare in excitement with the sound of a tenor in full throttle. Something about the nature and vibrations of the tenor sound arouses rapture bordering on hysteria in the audience - especially the high notes at the top of his register, the B flat, the B natural and especially the high C. These are the tenor’s “money notes”, what the public pays its to dollar to hear. And this is the reason why, from the opera houses’ point of view, “a good tenor is the best box office”. They also tend to make tenors past and present very rich men indeed! This illustrated talk will examine the origins and nature of tenor-worship, chart the differences between the different kinds of tenor voice and examine the history of the tenor through the greatest names, from Caruso to today. Free entry but please confirm attendance on 020 7563 9835 or at press@helleniccentre.org Organised by the Hellenic Centre.

Tears of Iron: Olympias after the Death of Alexander the Great A Talk in English by Robin Waterfield and launch of his book Dividing the Spoils, the War for Alexander the Great’s Empire. Everyone has heard of Alexander the Great, the famous conqueror. But what happened after his death to the lands he had conquered? It took forty years of world-changing warfare for his successors to carve up the empire. This thrilling period of unremitting warfare, treachery, assassination, passion, shifting alliances, and mass slaughter, has been neglected. Dividing the Spoils resurrects the fascinating story of this period - both the warfare and the world-changing cultural developments that were taking place at the same time. Free entry but please confirm attendance on 020 7563 9835 or at press@helleniccentre.org Organised by the Hellenic Centre, the Macedonian Society of Great Britain and Oxford University Press.
