Top Universities in
Britain
This report on the ranking of the British Universities was published by
THE TIMES newspaper on MAY 15 1998 and the ranking is produced entirely from published
satistics. Positions in the table are determined by a "poll of polls", in which
results from eight indicators are converted into a points score and aggregated. The Higher
Education Statistics Agency provided data on entry qualifications, staffing levels,
library and computing spending, degree classifications, graduate destinations, entry
grades and student facilities. The other sources of information are the three higher
education funding councils, for the teaching and research assessments. A team of three
university experts - Dr Bernard Kingston (careers), Dr Andrew Hindmarsh (admissions) and
Professor Bob Loynes (statistics) - compiled the ranking. It is republished here in order
to help Greek Students with their studies.
