A Byzantine Neighbourhood in Athens: Recent Excavations in the Athenian Agora An illustrated lecture by Anne McCabe on the recent excavations by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens which have brought to light part of a neighbourhood of the tenth/eleventh century, whose modest houses provide welcome information about secular architecture of the Middle Byzantine period and daily life in medieval Athens. Cyprus Singalong Themis Themistocleous of the famous Isadoras group and well-known soprano Avra Shiatis with their band will perform popular Greek and international music and songs. The audience will be encouraged to sing along well known popular classic Greek songs with the aid of projected lyrics. Also performing: Lana Constantine, John Themis and Costas Rialas (bouzouki). The Pyrgos Rugs An illustrated talk by Denise Harvey, publisher and Jennifer Speake, scholar and writer, about a remarkable rug-making enterprise set up by the Australian humanitarian Joice Loch, a legendary figure for many visitors to Mount Athos, to provide an income for the destitute refugees from Anatolia settled on the Athos peninsula in 1922. Joice and her husband Sydney lived in the massive Byzantine tower in Ouranoupolis, so ‘Pyrgos’ (Tower) was the name given to the venture, which became so successful its rugs were sold internationally. A small exhibition of rugs and related items will be on display at the Centre for the talk.
