The Rediscovery of the Temples at Paestum and their Influence on the Art and Architecture of the 18th and 19th Centuries A lecture in English by Angus Haldane. Under the rule of Charles III of Bourbon, the cleaning of the forests and the draining of the malarial swamps around Paestum, or Poseidonia, revealed three of the most wonderful Doric temples, dating from the 6th century BC. Artists such as Canaletto, Piranesi and Joli flocked to Paestum to explore and paint the ruins. Their works illustrate a complex synthesis between the art and architecture of ancient Greece and the political, social and philosophical developments of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Καμπος Χιου (Kambos, Chios) An event in Greek with simultaneous interpreting in English dedicated to the area of Kambos on the island of Chios. Kambos-Architecture and Environment by Leonidas Mylonadis highlights some of Kambos’ unique characteristics. These include its houses and courtyards made of coloured limestone from the neighbouring village of Thymiana, as well as its historic and charming surrounding citrus orchards, hidden behind tall stone walls. Kambos-A Trip in History by Fani Anerousi gives an account of the important events, since the Genoan period, which have determined Kambos’ superb architecture and surroundings and subsequently made its mark on the island's cultural history. The Pebbled Courtyards of Chios by Maria Xyda concludes the series with a talk on Chios’ courtyards, which are important elements in the gardens and orchards of the island. She sheds light on the composition, the techniques and materials involved as well as the craftsmen. A short film will be shown and local kersmata (treats), kindly provided by Vagelis Xydas, will be offered, after the talks.
